Dundee is a city enjoying rapid expansion with its location placing it within easy reach of Scotland’s major towns and cities. According to the Sunday Times University Guide, almost half of Scotland’s population can be found within a 60 mile radius of the city.
One of the many Dundee attractions is that it draws its employees from such a wide catchment area. Its population is 142,170 – yet there are more than 300,000 highly skilled people that boost the city by being economically active and situated within just 30 minutes drive of Dundee. Indeed if that radius is expanded further, then there are 630,000 people within an hour’s drive of the city.
Many businesses that choose Scotland do so because of its knowledge-driven economy and Dundee’s key attractions are no exception. Its strengths come in the form of life sciences, education and its creative industries. The higher education establishments are thriving too with students attracted to the area by its reputation as well as student life in Dundee and Dundee nightlife. The University of Dundee, along with Dundee College and the University of Abertay, have a combined roster of more than 40,000 students; while the University of St Andrews is located within a 20 minute drive and can add a further 7,000 students to that stock.
Dundee University is considered one of the UK’s great academic, economic and research success stories and was recently named as the number one university for teaching excellence, and as the Scottish University of the Year. It is also considered the best university in Scotland for environmental research.
